Designing an iOS App from Start to Finish

Well, hold onto your hats, folks, because I’ve got an electrifying tale to share! Brace yourselves for the exhilarating journey I embarked upon with the sensational startup, Trophy Golf.

And guess what? I’ve gone above and beyond to capture every single moment of this epic adventure in a YouTube video series!

If you’re ready, get ready to see something amazing! Here’s how this project happened.

Here is the shortened version of what happened in our first week:

The Process

In most cases when working on a project you’ll follow a double-diamond framework, which is great. Until you can’t spend 2 weeks on research.

That’s why I’ve always been a firm believer that the best process depends on the type of the project and your timeline.

In this case, we had 3 weeks to design – EVERYTHING.

I chose to look at Reddit and Facebook groups and understand what people are looking for and what we need to have and also I trusted my gut.

If you develop your eye for design you will know 90% of cases what makes a good design no matter if you have industry knowledge or not, in which case I haven’t stepped foot on a golf course.

Day 1

When starting a project there are two things I always do regardless of the timeline.

Mood boarding

When doing the mood boards I focus on the look and feel, but not for the entire project. Sometimes even small elements can convey the feeling I want it to have.

I don’t need to make it super fancy, especially since we had a limited timeline.

Competitive analysis

The goal of this step is to look at what other apps in the space are doing and try to understand what can we do better.

The best way is to play with the apps, but also a good way is to look at Reddit or other forums what people are saying.

A great way is to look at the app store ratings and look for the positive and negative comments.

Day 2

This day we had one simple goal. Come up with the color and initial style based on the mood board that the client approved.

To be honest, this is one of my favorite parts of the process. You can go wild to explore new concepts and colors.

Since this is a mobile project I focused on the hardest flow to solve and made it clear to the client that these are not final – but a direction.

Day 3 to 5

After an initial client call after day 2, I tried to keep in sync with them on day 3 as well based on the updates I did and looked for quit approval so we could get to production.

The method of this week is – to design at a rapid speed.

When doing this we can make a lot of mistakes, as we are following our gut. This can be good or bad and it was a risk we were ok to take.

What to avoid

One thing to avoid in these early stages is building a design system. I think in your exploration it’s completely useless, especially since you have no idea what elements you will have nor if this is the final (if there can be a final) version.

Working in this fast-paced environment can push you to your limits, but it’s refreshing trying to come up with something you don’t truly understand.

If you want you can tag along and see how this project unfolded.

The next best interface is… No interface?

What’s your favorite go-to app for entertainment? TikTok? Instagram? YouTube? Notice how they all have one thing in common?

There’s not much interface. Just the content, and you!

It feels super satisfying to just keep scrolling and consuming the content, right? It’s almost like you’d never want to stop scrolling because it’s just so addictive and relaxing to keep scrolling through the infinite vertical scroll.

If you want to take a peek at what it really takes to build an iOS app in 4 weeks, check out part 2 of my video series.

What is the infinite vertical scroll?

The infinite vertical scroll provides a never-ending flow of content, which is automatically loaded as the user swipes upward.

This removes the need for users to make active decisions about which content to view next, providing a continuous, uninterrupted browsing experience. Kind of like sliding through a waterslide, right.

In fact, this design strategy makes use of the user’s curiosity and the desire for more content, keeping them engaged and interacting with the app for extended periods.

The simplicity and ease of accessing new content reduce friction and allow users to immerse themselves in the content. At the same time, the user interface is stripped down to its most basic form, requiring just a simple swipe to navigate through content.

This simplicity reduces cognitive load, as users don’t need to learn complex navigation patterns and can interact with the content effortlessly. This makes the users stay a lot longer on the platform, consuming content for many many hours without even noticing it!

When industry giants like Spotify start integrating a design trend, it’s a clear sign of its staying power. The vertical scroll is no longer just for social media—it’s reshaping user experiences across the board.

Smaller new apps like CREME are using the approach in fresh new ways. CREME is insanely great—a design and UX masterclass. When you open the app, you’re immediately immersed in an endless feed of beautiful full-screen video recipes from chefs.

There’s almost no interface. Just the content and you!

Creme iOS App

This shift towards the vertical scroll is more than just a passing phase. It’s the next wave of immersive, engaging mobile experiences that will inform a new generation of apps.

Benefits of the infinite vertical scroll

Before talking about how you could take advantage of this as a beginner UI designer, let’s go through some of the benefits that the vertical scroll has…

Enhanced User Engagement:

The infinite flow of new content keeps users curious and engaged, as there is always something new and unexpected with each swipe. This continuous engagement can increase session times and user interaction with the app.

Simplicity and Ease of Use:

The straightforward interaction model of simply swiping to access new content increases the ease of usage, making the app super easy to use for a wide range of users, even if they’re not tech-savvy.

Content Discoverability:

The infinite scroll exposes users to a diverse array of content that they might not have actively sought out, enhancing the discoverability of new content creators, trends, and information.

Reduced Decision Fatigue:

By continuously providing new content without requiring user input, the app reduces the mental load on users, allowing them to enjoy content without needing to make constant decisions about what to watch next.

So how can you take advantage of this?

As a beginner in UI design, the infinite vertical scroll is a huuuge thing you can learn from and take advantage of in your own projects.

There are several takeaways that you can learn and gain massive insights from this new UI trend:

User-Centric Design:

Focusing on user behavior and needs is super important. Understanding how users interact with content, what keeps them engaged, and what might cause them to disengage is crucial in designing an effective interface.

Content Prioritization:

Understanding algorithms and design principles that prioritize and curate content effectively is vital.

This involves learning about user behavior analysis, content ranking algorithms, and personalized content delivery mechanisms to enhance user engagement and satisfaction.

Interaction Design:

Designing intuitive and seamless interactions involves understanding user gestures, ensuring that the interface responds in a way that feels natural and predictable, and ensuring that additional interactive elements (like buttons or sliders) are implemented in a non-disruptive manner.

Performance Considerations:

Ensuring that the infinite scroll performs smoothly and efficiently is crucial.

This involves understanding lazy loading, optimizing media for mobile viewing, and ensuring that the user experience is smooth and lag-free, even with continuous content loading.

User Feedback:

Actively seeking, analyzing, and implementing user feedback is crucial for iterative design.

Understanding user pain points, frustrations, and desires can guide design improvements and enhancements.

Typography is important in No Interface

You have to make sure that the words aren’t disruptive in any way that affects the user experience. Strategic typography is something that you can’t neglect when designing a project with no interface.

Your typography should be complementary to the visual content. It should convey the necessary information without distracting from the primary content, maintaining a clean and focused user experience.

Readability is key. Ensuring that fonts, sizes, and colors are optimized for various devices and user conditions is non-negotiable. Establishing a clear and effective typographic hierarchy ensures that any textual information is easily digestible and does not overwhelm the user.

You also want to make sure to have a consistent typographic style that aligns with the brand identity. This involves consistent use of typefaces, weights, and styles that resonate with the brand’s aesthetic and values.

Textual content should also be relevant and contextually appropriate, providing added value to the user without detracting from the visual content. This might involve succinct captions, clear calls to action, or subtle content descriptions that enhance understanding and engagement.

🚨 Remember

Your typography has to be accessible and legible for all users, including those with visual impairments or other accessibility needs.

This involves considering font sizes, contrasts, and alternative text descriptions to ensure inclusive design!

In conclusion, the vertical scroll is a powerful way to keep users engaged while giving them a whole new experience in their entertainment.

It’s not going to “die down” like a trend, so learn as much as you can from this wonderful and interesting type of user interface.

Top Fonts for Modern Interfaces in 2024 (+ Typography Best Practices)

Is there a difference when you eat chocolate bars from different chocolate brands?

Most people aren’t so obsessed with chocolate bars that they can taste huge differences between different chocolate brands.

The same goes for the different typefaces in UI design!

Many beginner designers might not see the difference in using specific typefaces for certain user interfaces, but it’ll look weird when the font doesn’t match the UI.

Just like how you probably have a certain go-to chocolate brand although “all chocolate tastes the same” – because it just feels right.

We all love Inter and the new Geist from Vercel, I get it.

But what other options do you have for designing modern interfaces that are scalable and readable?

To answer the question of what are the best fonts for modern UI… I decided to ask my community over Twitter, to recommend me new typefaces, and collected the 5 most mentioned ones into this blog!

Choosing the right fonts

To establish a robust typography system, your initial step is selecting the right font family. Each year, a flood of new typefaces enters the scene, making the choice for your project a daunting task.

Here’s the reality: it’s wise to disregard a whopping 99% of these fresh fonts. This may sound like an exaggeration, but the truth is, that the majority of modern fonts are of subpar quality, often mere variations of popular font families aimed at quick profits.

If you’re new to design, start with classic, reliable fonts like neutral sans-serif typefaces. They’re a safe choice until you gain more experience. While it’s tempting to experiment with various fonts, especially combinations like serif and sans-serif, it can be tricky.

For beginners, simplicity is key, so stick with the fonts recommended in this post.

Manrope

A perfect font to replace your traditional fonts. It has 7 weights (albeit no italic).

What I’ve noticed from using Manrope is that it’s a thinner font, so when you get to lower sizes you’ll need to increase the thickness, but I’ve also noticed that I don’t use that much regular with it (mostly Medium or Bold).

The letterforms are a little bit more compact, which could often mean that you need to use a slightly larger font size to make it more readable.

Get Manrope 👉 here

Aeonik

Aeonik is a really well-designed grotesque typeface.

If you are looking for sharper edges and geometrical font this might be your new love. The most noticeable characters are the ‘f’, ‘j’, and ‘t’ which feature 90-degree turns and straight outstrokes.

Aeonik is very versatile and highly legible, however, this comes at a cost as the licenses might be out of reach for certain organizations and designers.

Get Aeonik 👉 here (starting at $120)

Satoshi

If you are looking for a more geometrical and grotesque font – Satoshi is the right one for you.

Satoshi is also a bit narrower than Inter or SF Pro and it also lacks italics. It’s a very good alternative to the widely loved Circular (which is a paid font).

What I don’t like about it is that you always need to have uneven spacing on top and bottom as it has a higher line height, which easily makes your elements visually not centered.

Get Satoshi 👉 here

Work Sans

Work Sans is an ideal type choice for modern user interfaces because of its simplicity and readability, making it well-suited for both body text and headlines in digital environments.

Work Sans has a very “relaxed” spacing, which allows the letterforms to breathe unlike Manrope or Satoshi when they are closer together.

I really like the “g”, and the tail on the “a” that it gives.

If you decide to use it, be mindful that this font will feel “heavier” so you might want to go down a bit on font sizes and weights, and maybe even play with the kerning.

One more limitation of Work Sans is its relatively limited character set and language support, which may be a drawback for projects that require extensive multilingual or special character usage

Get Work Sans 👉 here

IBM Plex Sans

IBM Plex Sans is a fantastic choice for modern user interfaces due to its exceptional legibility, open letterforms, and generous spacing, enhancing readability on screens.

Its extensive language support and comprehensive set of styles, including multiple weights and italics, provide designers with a wide range of options for creating visually appealing and adaptable user interfaces.

However, one potential downside of IBM Plex Sans is that it may lack a distinctive and unique personality compared to some other contemporary typefaces, which could make it less suitable for brands or projects seeking a more individualistic and memorable typographic identity.

Other typefaces

There are a lot of other typefaces that didn’t make the cut, as I think they are widely known and used such as Figtree, Graphik, Helvetica, Poppins, Nunito, and Gilroy.

Good practices when using any new fonts:

With any new font that you are not familiar with a great way to start working with it is setting some boundaries.

The best way for you to create that scale is by hand, and this will be the easiest way. I always advise you to start with the main paragraph size and take it from there, but thanks to tools you can now create it with a single click.

View the type scale generator

In interface design, our sole goal is to make the content readable and consistent system for a user to learn and understand.

Starting with some limitations can help you design better interfaces – faster.

For example, as of iOS 17 the type sizes would be as follows:

In the quest for the perfect fonts in your UI design, it’s tempting to mix and match. Maybe you’re torn between a couple of stellar fonts or considering a blend of serif and sans-serif?

But here’s the deal – keeping it simple with just one typeface is a smart move. Multiple fonts can turn your design into a chaotic clutter fest. If you absolutely must, stick to two fonts max. Often, modern fonts offer a range of weights, giving you the versatility you need.

So, whether you choose one or two fonts, remember, less is often more when it comes to effective design.

It’s important to note that the rule of four can be extended by changing other aspects of the type. Each of these changes can effectively change the meaning of that particular piece of the interface.

1. User-Centricity

user-centricity

User-centricity is, without-a-doubt one of the most fundamental principles in UX design. User needs and preferences are at the forefront of the design process.

Designers put a lot of thought into creating experiences that are genuinely satisfying and intuitive for their target audience.

This process also involves research on things, such as user interviews and testing, to try and better understand user behavior and preferences.

Designers strive to ensure usability, accessibility, and aesthetics align with user expectations, iteratively refining their designs based on user feedback.

The principle of user-centricity empowers designers to empathize with users, address their needs effectively, and create engaging products that foster long-lasting satisfaction.

2. Usability Testing

Usability Testing

Usability testing is a critical practice in UX design that involves observing and gathering feedback from real users as they interact with a digital product or interface.

Observing users’ actions, behaviors, and feedback allows designers to identify usability issues and areas for improvement.

Participants are given specific tasks to perform during usability testing. Their interactions are recorded and analyzed. This process helps provide insights into how users navigate the product, their challenges, and their perception of the user experience.

The benefits of usability testing are numerous. It helps uncover usability issues that may hinder user satisfaction or task completion.

By identifying these issues early on, designers can make informed design decisions and improve prototypes to enhance usability.

Usability testing also validates design choices, ensuring the product meets user expectations and goals. It helps assess the effectiveness of navigation, layout, and interactions, contributing to a seamless and intuitive user experience.

Additionally, usability testing bridges the gap between designers and users, bringing valuable perspectives and insights. By involving users directly, designers gain empathy and create designs that align better with user needs and preferences.

3. Accessibility Testing

Accessibility Testing

Accessibility testing is another vital principle that ensures equal access and usability for all users, regardless of their abilities or disabilities. It involves evaluating the product’s design and functionality to identify barriers that may hinder individuals with disabilities from effectively using it.

Accessibility testing involves various techniques such as screen reader compatibility, keyboard navigation, color contrast analysis, and alternative text verification.

By conducting thorough accessibility testing, designers can make informed decisions and implement necessary modifications to create inclusive and user-friendly experiences for everyone. It is vital in promoting digital inclusivity and ensuring every user is included.

4. Consistency

Consistency

Following the principle of consistency in UX design creates a smooth and predictable user experience. It involves keeping elements consistent throughout a product, such as visual design, interaction patterns, terminology, and layout.

This uniformity helps users navigate and interact with the product more intuitively, reducing cognitive load.

When elements are consistent, users can develop mental models and expectations, making learning and using the product easier.

Consistency also contributes to brand identity, trust, and credibility. By following consistent design principles, designers can craft a cohesive and seamless user experience that improves usability and user satisfaction.

5. Visual Hierarchy

Visual Hierarchy

Visual hierarchy is another key principle in UX design that organizes and prioritizes information to guide users. It structures content and elements to communicate their importance and relationships.

A clear hierarchy helps users navigate and find what they need. Visual cues like size, color, and typography can highlight important elements.

Content is organized based on relevance, with important information prominently displayed. Secondary and tertiary information is presented more subtly.

Hierarchy establishes visual relationships and groups related elements together. It aids comprehension and helps users understand connections between components.

6. User Control

User Control

User control is a principle in UX design that focuses solely on helping users navigate and interact with digital products and services. It involves clear interfaces, customization options, and informed decision-making.

By prioritizing user needs, designers can enhance usability and satisfaction. User control promotes a sense of ownership and autonomy, allowing individuals to personalize their interactions.

This fosters trust, reduces frustration, and leads to engaging and enjoyable user experiences.

7. Achieving the Right Balance

Achieving the Right Balance

Providing the right control with balance can allow users to navigate and interact with digital interfaces according to their preferences and goals.

Achieving the right balance is key; insufficient control can frustrate users, while excessive control can confuse them.

Designers should focus on the key principle of balance for intuitive and customizable features that empower users to feel a sense of ownership and agency over their experience.

Clear navigation, adjustable settings, and contextual cues aid users in effortlessly exploring and manipulating the interface, fostering a feeling of empowerment and ultimately improving user satisfaction.

8. Follow the UX Design Patterns

Follow the UX Design Patterns

As a UX designer, you must emphasize the importance of consistency and familiarity in creating user-friendly interfaces.

UX design patterns refer to established solutions for common design problems that have been proven to work effectively.

Consistent use of patterns also helps users navigate and interact with digital products or websites more easily, reducing the learning curve and enhancing overall usability.

Implementing the core principle of UX design patterns improves user satisfaction and streamlines the design process by providing pre-tested solutions.

However, designers must balance familiarity with innovation, ensuring that patterns are adapted appropriately to meet each project’s specific needs and goals.

What Is User Experience (UX) Design?

The era of digitalization has shifted every business and brand to the digital realm. With the integration of digital formats, tools, and platforms, user experience (UX) design has become more important than ever.

User experience (UX) design refers to a user’s interaction with a product, encompassing various aspects of end-user needs. These include all the factors resulting in a positive brand experience for a client.

Let’s think about your most recent experience of browsing a website. Did you find a product or information that you were looking for?

Was your experience productive and entertaining? The answers to these questions are critical to user experience (UX) design.

UX design ensures a less cumbersome process and experience for customers. With a better UX design, a business can offer people-conscious services and products as it significantly impacts brand experience.

What Does User Experience (UX) Design Include?

ux-thought-process

UX design includes every process a designing team refers to for a seamless and meaningful user experience.

The primary requirement for exemplary user experience includes meeting customer needs, providing accurate information, and relevant integration of products, services, usability, and branding.

Most UX designers must combine product development, market research, and strategy for a better product experience. Thus, it is not as simple as giving your customers better accessibility on a website.

How to Balance User Experience (UX) Design and Business Goals for Customer Retention?

designfeedback

About 88% of visitors don’t return to a website if they have an unsatisfying experience.

Businesses cannot take the risk of losing most of their potential customers. Thus, providing the best user experience to clients is crucial for a business to thrive.

Hence, user experience (UX) design aims to fulfill a user’s needs to ensure that a visitor revisits the website. This requires UX to support customer needs without distracting them from their product experience.

On the other hand, UX design is the aesthetic approach to the website, which results in easy navigation. An excellent UX design ensures that a product directly communicates with a customer without necessary jargon.

Why Is User Experience (UX) Design Important?

According to PWC, about 32% of users abandon a brand after one bad experience. This signifies the impact of user experience, which should be an ongoing process rather than a one-time consideration.

A good UX design also considers visitors’ preferences while keeping the branding guidelines intact. This way, users do not waste their time on complex processes on a website.

Nearly 80% of customers think that convenience, information, speed, and accessibility of services are the most important aspects of a positive customer brand experience.

It forms an integral part of this experience. Businesses can invest in UX designs to get help for the following.

Simplify Customer Journey

Enhance User Experience

Boost Conversion

How Long Does It Take To Perfect User Experience (UX) Design?

This is a constant process that requires frequent collection of user feedback to make changes to the design.

Suppose you run a fashion website. You notice an increase in the number of users abandoning their carts.

In this case, it would be crucial for you to collect user feedback to allow your designers to address the problems. This will enable you to create an effective user experience with a reduced number of cart abandonment.

That being said, you need to get your basics right. Start with a basic design and walk along the complex process based on customer feedback.

However, it is also important to note that what might work today may not be popular in the next few years. Thus, staying updated on the latest trends is vital to perfect your UX design accordingly.

Types of Projects for User Experience (UX) Designers

uxdesign

UX designers are involved in an array of projects, ranging from website interface, usability, product navigation, website, and mobile app development. Their design spectrum depends on industry, project, and organization requirements.

A UX designer’s primary focus is to provide insight into the design of products to ensure intuitiveness and ergonomics. Then they use customer behavior and preferences to create efficient user interfaces for websites.

What Do You Need to Get Started With User Experience (UX) Design?

Before implementing a UX strategy, you need to learn everything about user expectations and the latest market trends. When starting as a UX designer, you need to know the following.

Understanding User Preference

You must familiarize yourself with user preferences while catering to customers on various apps and websites. Thus, you need to know more about users, their interests, expectations, and how they interact.

Brand Guidelines

Understanding brand guidelines is vital for a UX designer as they provide insight into brand personality, values, and products.

Design Guideline

A thorough understanding of design methodologies to incorporate customer feedback into the designing process.

Understanding of Market Trends

As a designer, you may think you’ve done an excellent job. But if your design does not follow the latest trends, you will miss out! Customers want to use modern products with up-to-date methodologies.

Impact of User Experience (UX) Design on Business and Branding

A digital presence is essential to provide a business with wings to fly. If a business has a robust internet presence, users are more likely to convert into paying customers.

If you wish to touch the hearts of consumers, a seamless user experience is quite impactful.

UX design undeniably affects business and branding. A seamless user experience can promise business with customer loyalty and an increased conversion rate.

These two factors can flourish a digitized business by fostering credibility amongst customers.

On the other hand, a poor UX design can result in losing potential customers and a negative brand image. Thus, this is the ultimate key to a business’s success in building brand value.
